#CPAFallRecruit2014 – Interview Success – When Interviews Are Conversational!

I planned for a structured interview and they just want to talk – What do I do?

Many candidates have been surprised when both firms and interviewers decide they will have a conversation with the candidates during an interview and even spend time telling them about their firm – when they called the meeting an “interview.”

In fact, this approach is called a “conversational interview” or a “flexible interview.” Research has shown that the accuracy of obtaining a ‘successful hire’ is equal to the results of a structured interview, although some disagree with this assertion. Nevertheless, they happen AND they happen during this wonderful thing we call CPA Recruiting!

Conversational interviews are really great opportunities to hear what recruiters and firms have to say about themselves which opens up what they truly believe about themselves. The information given during the dialogue is frequently more specific than what was discussed during networking and often will include the things they believe are most attractive about their firm, clients, training process, work/life balance and the future opportunities they provide for their new hires.

Be sure to show great interest when they are marketing themselves and make statements in reply that prove that they have inspired you with the information. Inquire with questions that are in line with the information they are sharing with you and let them know how it has increased your desire to be part of their firm.

When the interview takes on a more casual role, where they are simply talking about various things, be sure to be ready with some talking points that you can initiate if needed. These talking points are prepared the same way as the questions you are preparing to ask the firm during a structured interview when they ask, “Do you have any questions for us?”

Enjoy this dialogue keeping in mind…this is still an interview and it is definitely “game on!” Don’t be lulled into a place where you do not perform at your best. This is an opportunity to demonstrate your communication skills, ‘small talk’ abilities and to demonstrate your knowledge of the firm, its business and its clients. Likely, veiled in the conversation, will be some questions and/or topics they are hoping you will elaborate on.  Eaborate well!

So…don’t be surprised. but rather, be ready, enjoy yourself and, ‘knock it out of the park!’

Good Luck!
