You Asked, We Answered: UBC DAP Internship FAQ

We are thrilled with the positive response we’ve received to-date from UBC DAP students regarding the UBC DAP pilot internship program!

To address a number of questions we’ve received since posting the internship positions last Friday, please review the following FAQs to help you on your journey to securing an internship position.

Am I required to complete all five foundation level courses to qualify for an internship role?  Employers have requested that students complete the first five foundation level courses prior to starting the internship program. However, there are a few exceptions: 1) Exemption courses count towards the foundation course requirement (e.g. if you received exemption status for courses taken elsewhere), 2) If you have not completed Management Information Systems (BUSI 335) but you have sufficient experience in Microsoft Excel, you can apply for an internship position, 3) Commercial Law is not mandatory.

What if I’m registered for foundation level courses in Summer Term 1, does that                  count? No, in order to qualify for an internship position you need to finish the courses by the end of Winter Term 2. Employers will request final grades from Winter Term 2 courses during the interview stage.

Are the internship positions paid? Some of the employers have committed to paying interns, although the hourly wage/ internship bonus may differ from employer to employer. Therefore, clarify this information during the interview stage.

What is the time commitment for each position? Each role varies and it’s up to each                  student and employer to come up with a schedule that works for both of you. The employers                include a number of UBC DAP alumni who are familiar with the time-commitment of being a DAP student, so they’ve agreed to work out a schedule that works for both the employer and the successful intern.

Is the process competitive? Absolutely! We’ve received a lot of interest from highly qualified            UBC DAP students. However, we encourage you to take advantage of the career resources                      available to you to ensure you land an interview. For example, reach out to Russell Garrett to help      you with your resume or to help you prepare for an interview, and visit myUBCDAP to access                additional resources.

I hope this information helps. If you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact me directly at Shannon.Thompson@sauder.ubc.ca.

The deadline to apply is next Friday, April 13th at 4pm PST.

Best of luck!
